A road trip from the capital to the port city of Hodeida on the Red Sea.
A collection of photographs along the way. Basically, the major coffee areas are all on near Sana’a, to the west.
We stopped in small roadside towns to eat, to check out the qat markets, and (for me) to gawk a bit. This place is just so fantastic. You can point a camera anywhere and take an amazing photo it seems.
I know it’s just because I am not from here. Everything from faraway is exotic, and we are all aware of the dangers of exoticizing other people’s lives, other people’s cultures. But is it okay to be awed? To find something unfamiliar to you awesome?
I think it’s ok!
Road Trip to Hodeida Photos:
There are a lot of military checkpoints in Yemen, and they definitely were extra interested in our car, since we had 2 Americans in there. Yemen Lively discussion over vegetables. Yemen Passing through small towns, taking pictures from the car, like a coward. Yemen Lotsa nice old Toyota Land Cruisers here. Yemen Arguing with friends Yemen Shooting off some fireworks… Yemen You don’t see this often, a destitute person. Yemen Probably covering themselves due to dust on the road, more than anything. Wish I had one … the dust was killing me. Yemen Oops … with the way driving is in Yemen, I was surprised not to see more of this. Yemen Qat in the foreground, town, and terraces for agriculture. Yemen They seemed to have walked off and just left the car like this Yemen New Mexico, or Yemen? The rocks weren’t telling. Yemen Everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE, you see these horses depicted, the ensignia of the rural party that dominates the provinces in Yemen. Yemen They wanted a picture in their truck. Yemen We stopped for lunch In Manekah. Even at a simple roadside place, the food was great, mostly because all the meat is butchered right there… Yemen See? Yemen Not often that the older fellows wanted a picture, but he did. he was sitting at the table next to ours. Yemen If alone, I wouldn’t have the courage to stop at any old place like this, and be assured that I wouldn’t get ill. As it was, I had no stomach issues, even slight, the entire trip, whereas a long trip in Central America almost always has some gastronomic discomfort attached. Yemen Since I had the good camera, Duane benefited by getting lots of great pictures of himself. What did I get? Huyh? Yemen Yemen is filled with great micro motorcycles, 2 strokes and such. I wanted to get a bunch of pictures of them but didn’t, except for a few like this. Yemen Need I say more Yemen Some downtime for a tired mule. Yemen Tourist hotel – I don’t think so… Yemen Next to the tourist hotel in Manakah, Yemen (pop. 300, not including the mules) was the Al Hajrah museum of Art Treasures. Yemen The toyota pickups were mostly decorated like this, with great, bright painting. Yemen
