Scouting out new coffee sources in the South of Ethiopia (a 2012 trip)
Aleco and I made a trip to EthiopiaEthiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia, or a coffee cultivar: Ethiopia, or more specifically the Empire under Haile Selassie, was known as Abyssinia. The name is Latin, derived from... ...more to scout out new possibilities, and to eat Tibs. Here are a few pictures I selected from that trip.
I am lugging around a 6 x 6 Hasselblad film camera as well, and when I load the film correctly the results are quite nice

Minor Miner – In the South, trace amounts of gold are panned from the streams. Addis Lady – I really like the commercial paintings in Addis and all over Ethiopia, especially for beauty salons and such. Perspective! Billygoat – Not sure what to make of this crazy hair, but he was a charmer. MorMora Mill – Mormora Mill Shakiso – A Stretch – When coffee drying tables are not in use, they can find function for drying hides. Mormora Farm Shakiso – All Green – Next crop’s harvest is on the trees already, since cherry takes such an extraordinarily long time to mature and ripen. Honey Basket – Traditional beekeeping is dont in many parts of Ethiopia, where people climb to the highest branches and place hive baskets. Mormora Farm Shakiso – Mora Mora Forest – Coffee near the MoraMora river, planted in lush forest area. Korkor Wet Mill Shakiso – A local girl at this small wet mill in the south Harare – This area is of the Guji Oromo ethnic group, but there is a family of Harare people from East Ethiopia in the area, including the matriarch. Lover’s Nest – My room in Shakiso is just bigger than the bed, with it’s wonderfully gaudy spread Flat Tire – We had a flat tire, which was a chance to stop and photograph the area, around 2800 meters high and very chilly Cold – We were trying to get to Addis, a 12 hour drive, and left early. We reached over 3000 meters on this road, and it was quite cold. Basket Fence – Basket Case – Wattle and daub basket houses with basket roofs, along the way. Hearth – Warmth from the hearth creates steam in the cold, early morning air. Hey Latte – Buna, Mar and Dabo for a break: Coffee, honey, bread. Aleta Wondo – – Insect-o-tower – Some areas have huge ant towers, although I am really not sure – they might be termite towers. Headed South, Oromo basket house – A film image I took of the classic Oromo round house. 6×6 Hasselblad Coffee Forest – Farms in this area are planted, but preserve original story of shade trees overhead. 6×6 film image, Hasselblad – – –
