Ambient Temperature

The temperature in a given room or space: This term is used to describe the overall temperature in a given environment, and is an important variable in coffee roasting. It can potentially affect the way home roasters operate depending on how extreme the temperature is.

A very cold ambient temperature will require the roaster to work harder to achieve proper roasting temperatures which may extend the amount of time necessary to reach desired roast levels. In some cases, roasters will not be able to operate in extremely cold environments.

Ambient temperature seems particularily important with small air coffee roasters, Popper, Freshroast, Air Popcorn Poppers. They draw in air from the bottom, past the heating element, into the roast chamber. Colder or warmer air variations can mean a much different roast dynamic, and different results in the roast process.
