Kenya - SL-28 Cultivar - Nyeri Kenya

Scott Laboratories of Kabete Kenya developed the selection SL-28 Kenya cultivar, a preferred type with Bourbon, in 1935. It supposedly is selected from Tanganyika Drought Resistant cultivar, found by A.D. Trench on a trip through Tanzania, and has similar drought resistant properties. SL- in the name is Scott Labs, of course, also called SAL for Scott Agricultural Laboratories

Some prefer SL-28 to the SL-34 that was developed for a slightly different climate and terrain.

According to historical documents, AD Trench noticed a variety growing in the Moduli district of what is now Tanzania, that appeared to be tolerant to drought, diseases and pests. Seed was collected and brought back to Scott Laboratories, where its drought resistance was confirmed.

The coffee he brought was called Tanganyika Drought Resistant and was widely distributed until superseded by its progeny, SL28. SL28 was considered the prize selection of this period of intensive breeding.Recent genetic tests have confirmed that SL28 is related to the Bourbon genetic group.
