Purchasing the ROEST
What does the ROEST cost? What models are available?
ROEST currently makes three models: the S100 ($5,490), S100 Plus ($7,090), and L100 Plus ($7,890).
You can see a comparison of features here. We don’t carry the S100 even though the price is much lower, because it misses key features like First CrackFirst crack in one of two distinct heat-induced pyrolytic reactions in coffee. It is distinguished by a cracking or popping sound in the coffee, and occurs between 390... ...more Detection that make the ROEST so special. Sweet Maria’s focuses on stocking the L100 Plus, but we will try to keep S100 Plus in stock too. Please check with us on current stock.
How do I buy a ROEST in the US?
You can order a ROEST from Sweet Maria’s of course! You can also order from ROEST in Norway as well at the same price — either way you get the same great machine and same warranties.
Sweet Maria’s machines are already customs cleared, tariffs paid, and ready to ship. Sweet Maria’s has a stock of ROEST parts and accessories in the US, too. We simply have an agreement form to sign online, and to receive your payment. Voila!
What are the electrical requirements?
For the US, the ROEST Sample roaster is 110-120 volts, with 1650 Watts max power consumption. ROEST offers an additional conversion kit, where you can use the machine at any voltage simply by replacing the heating element, fuse, and plug.
Does it need venting?
Yes, the ROEST needs venting to the outside. A ventilation hose is included in the purchase of your sample roaster. Simply connect the hose to the back of your machine and connect the other end to your ventilation system or direct the fumes out of a window. Read more about the ventilation options here.
What is the ROEST warranty?
It includes a 1 year warranty, spare parts and support free of charge.
After one year, you only pay for spare parts. ROEST support is free of charge. ROEST is built with Design to Repair, and with our guidance you should be able to replace parts and fix any issues without having to send the entire machine back to us.
ROEST AS warranties the product to be free from defects in workmanship and materials for the warranty period of 1 year. The warranty does not cover bundled accessories, which were delivered together with the Product. If the Product fails during normal and proper use within the warranty period, RØST Coffee AS will repair or replace the defective parts of the product, or the product itself, with new or reconditioned parts or products that are functionally equivalent or superior to those originally supplied.
What does shipping cost? What other costs are there at purchase?
Shipping: Sweet Maria’s charges a flat $75 shipping fee by UPS Ground for customers in the contiguous US. For other states or territories, we will charge the exact cost for shipping. We only sell the ROEST within the United States. For other countries, you can find a list of distributors on the ROEST website.
State Taxes: By default, we charge sales tax on the ROEST sample roaster. Some states have no sales tax on machines and equipment purchased for food manufacturing. Because these rules vary greatly state by state — even the definition of who qualifies as a “manufacturer” and what specific equipment qualifies as “manufacturing equipment” — you will need to do independent research for your state and provide us with the correct documents and forms to qualify for tax exemption on your purchase of the ROEST.
For most states, that document will be in the form of a manufacturer’s business license or permit, and a completed form signed by a state representative for Sales or Use Tax Exemption specific to machines used in manufacturing.
Can I get spare parts in the United States?
Yes, Sweet Maria’s will stock warranty parts, along with spares for machines out of warranty too. We will also be carrying accessory parts.
What if my machine needs repair?
ROEST offers extensive information for maintenance and self-repair of machines.
Sweet Maria’s will provide primary assistance and warranty parts at no charge for the machines we sell, and repair options as well as maintenance plans after the warranty expires.
Should a home roasting enthusiast consider the ROEST?
While the ROEST is designed for the professional, there may be some home roasters who are interested in the advanced features and ease-of-use of this machine. While it is easy to operate, it’s best if the user has a familiarity with coffee roastingThe application of heat to green coffee seeds (beans) to create palatable material for brewing a great cup!: Coffee roasting is a chemical process induced by heat, by... ...more so they can really appreciate the full value of what ROEST has to offer.

ROEST Basics
What is the batch capacity of ROEST sample roaster?
The batch is between 50 grams and 200 grams (with the add-on 200 gram kit). We find 100 to 120 grams to be the ideal batch size for the ROEST.
How long does the roast process take?
ROEST gives the user a wide range of control over the roast time and heat profile, to replicate a wide range of roasting styles from types of commercial machines.
For sample roasting at Sweet Maria’s, our favorite profile for washed coffee takes between 7:20 and 8:00 minutes on average, with 1:40 of that being development time after first crackAn audible popping sound heard during roasting. In coffee, one refers to "first crack" and "second crack," which come from two different classes of chemical reactions.: An audible... ...more.
Is the ROEST an air roaster or a drum roaster?
ROEST is a hybrid, stirred-drum roaster. It combines the best features from fluid-bed and drum roasters into the design. It uses hot air as the main heat source, but we do not use air to move the coffee beans around. So, you are free to manipulate the airflow without any compromise. This way your sample roaster is much closer to production roasters in terms of roasting style.
Where is ROEST made?
ROEST is designed and made in Norway.
Can the roast profiles be shared?
Absolutely! Take a look at the online shared library. You can also share profiles directly with other users without posting them to the public library.
Do you need an app to control the process?
No. In fact, you can roast coffee with any of your saved profiles without being “online”. Roast monitoring, comparison and profile design can be done on any laptop, tablet or phone via web browser. All our roasters operate independently, and can be controlled directly via the 5″ touch screen combined with the rotary encoder knob.
Can you modify the roast process mid-roast?
Yes. You can change parameters like roast time, development time after first crack, or the end point of a roast at any time, as well as enter Manual roasting mode (more on that below). We find the most common “on the fly” change we make is extending the Development Time (after first crack) field, for instance when we want to develop a coffee darker than the profile we’re using was designed for.
How do I use my Roest in manual mode?
Manual roasting can be a good starting point for those wanting to build a profile from scratch. However, we tend to favor modifying existing profiles as a way of creating new curves. If you do want to roast manually, we agree with Roest’s recommendation that using a Power profile is the most intuitive way of controlling the roast curve. You can see Roest’s guide to manual roasting here.
Is it very difficult to create new roast profiles or modify existing ones?
It’s very easy. While you can create a profile from scratch, we find the best way is to start with a roast batchOne of the most important variables in roasting coffee, the weight or volume of the coffee being put in to the roaster will dramatically affect the outcome of... ...more where you really like the result, and use that as a basis for a new profile. Depending on how many adjustments you want to make, creating a new roast profile can take just a few clicks before it’s ready to send to the machine. The ROEST comes with useful profiles to get you started, and you can easily adapt those to your own preferences.
How do you clean and maintain the machine?
The machine is designed to be easy to clean. You have access to the main fans from the back of the machine. ChaffChaff is paper-like skin that comes off the coffee in the roasting process. Chaff from roasting is part of the innermost skin (the silverskin) of the coffee fruit... ...more is collected in a special drawer that can be easily accessed from the front. By removing 4 screws on top of the machine you have access to the ventilation. Read more about maintenance for the ROEST.
What are the dimensions and weight? It it portable?
The machine is 266 x 375 x 410 mm (width x height x depth, incl. ventilation connector). With wooden panels, the ROEST is approximately 14 kg, and with the black panels around 16 kg.
ROEST makes a Pelican hard case specifically for those who want to travel with the machine. The lighter wood model is recommended for travel.
Is it noisy?
ROEST is quieter than commercial drum sample roasters. The noise is around 58 dB, measured 1 meter away from the roaster when the ventilation is connected.
What are the material / trim options?
All ROEST models are available with a choice of either wood or black versions. The wood version is stainless steel with wood side panels and handles. The black version is stainless steel with black aluminium side panels and black PTFE handles.

How does the ROEST compare to the Bullet?
They are two completely different beasts. The ROEST is designed as a professional sample roaster. Although it does back-to-back roasts (You can start a new batch seconds after the previous one drops into the cooling tray!), it does not have the hourly capacity of a Bullet. And a Bullet can’t do 50 to 100 gram sample roast batches that effectively.
Can the ROEST emulate the styles of other roasters?
I think it is possible with ROEST to model profiles from either air or drum type machines because there are so many ways to shape the roast profile. While ROEST is a drum roasterA roaster with a rotating drum that provides agitation to the beans, while a heating element (typically either electric or gas) provides heat. You can control variables like drum pressure that would be very hard to master with other types of roasters. And with 5 thermal sensors to use (in the L100 Plus), the control and collection of data is outstanding.
Can I take my profiles from a FreshRoast and use them in the ROEST?
I am not sure you would want to, after using the ROEST for a while. But yes, in principle. Converting would likely mean trying to line up certain time and temperatures from FreshRoast on the ROEST. I haven’t tried this, but if any roaster can do it, the ROEST can.
Does the ROEST have a roast community through their software similar to other online coffee roaster forums?
ROEST has an online forum and gets fast replies, but seems like the activity comes and goes. It seems less active now, and more like a way to get answers from ROEST staff. But there is lots of helpful info there. Since ROEST is used by professionals mostly, they may have less time to spend on forums as home roasters, perhaps.
