Catigua coffee variety is a cross between Yellow Catuai IAC 86 and Hibrido de Timor. it was developed in 1980s by The Agricultural Research Company of Minas Gerais (“EPAMIG”).

Researchers developed three varieties of Catigua, MG1, MG2, and MG3 for final release.

All of them have rust resistance, and MG3 is additionally resistant to nematodes, a worm-like agricultural pest that targets root systems. Due to their compact size, these trees can be planted closer together than other varieties.

Catgua MG2 has been planted and commercialized in Costa Rica and other places
