There have been 3 production runs of “Popper is a Coffee Roaster” so far. Here’s the details…
Popper is a Coffee RoasterA machine for roasting coffee. Or the person operating it! The basic requirements for a coffee roaster are a heating element that gets suitably hot and a mechanism... ...more … and it’s been around for a few years now. What are the different versions and models?
Well, there’s just 1 model of Popper coffee roaster. It’s a simple machine and we want to keep in affordable and true to the original design idea, based on the popcorn popper.

There have been 3 production runs. The first 2 production runs were basically similar, and you can identify them by the black bodyAssociated with and sensed by mouthfeel, body is sense of weight and thickness of the brew, caused by the percentage of soluble solids in the cup, including all... ...more color.
The 3rd production run has a gray -colored body and we are selling that starting March 2025. It has some improvements, but we don’t want to call it a new version or a V2 because at its core it’s the same idea, same design. The gray-colored Popper, from March 2025 (and on) has:
- The improved fan motor, the same that we offer in our Popper Motor Replacement Kit. This motor features harder carbons for more durability under heat.
- A new heat range and heat control knob, It basically takes the 2-3 useful heat levels from the first production runs, and expands that to 7 levels. The entire adjustable range of the heat knob is useful for roasting, and this means better control. But the heat levels are still “stepped” and not continuous. Plus the knob is numbered.
- Stronger Fan Speed knob post
- Trendy gray color (joke)

You can see the change in the look of the heat knob, which parallels the new functionality of this setting. It allows for better control of roast levels in the relevant heat range.
Are the parts compatible between the different production runs? Generally yes, but we haven’t tried out all possible combinations. It seemed that running the later control board with the earlier front panel resulted in higher fan speeds.
