Designed by Thompson, Popper is a Coffee RoasterA machine for roasting coffee. Or the person operating it! The basic requirements for a coffee roaster are a heating element that gets suitably hot and a mechanism… …more is our addition to the line up of home coffee roastingThe application of heat to green coffee seeds (beans) to create palatable material for brewing a great cup!: Coffee roasting is a chemical process induced by heat, by… …more machines. Popper is an air roaster based on the eponymous popcorn popper, which everyday people have been using to roast coffee at home for decades. It uses the same type of chamber that comes with popcorn poppers but includes controls for heat and fan speed, as well as a timer and cooling cycle.
The roaster offers easy control of heat and airflow during the roast for those who want to make manual adjustments. We suggest starting with a batch size of 90 g (3 oz) for best results. You can increase your batch size to 95g–100g provided that the agitation in the chamber passes the “spin test.” (Click through for a demonstration!) By default, Popper starts with a 7 minute roast cycle and 3 minute cooling cycle, though these can be adjusted at any point when roasting. It does not have pre-programmed settings, but you can manually profile roasts using the controls.
Popper works best for light and medium roasts! It can roast well for espressoA small coffee beverage, about 20 ml, prepared on an espresso machine where pressurized hot water extracted through compressed coffee.: In its most stripped-down, basic form, this is… …more too, but we do not recommend it for dark roasted beans. Roasting dark on air roasters will eventually damage their heating elements, shortening the lifespan of your roaster. As with all coffee roasters, you need to stay by the machine while it’s in use!
